Get rid of your desk. I know, I’m insane, but hear me out. Dumping the teacher’s desk is a great way to eliminate clutter and free up space in a classroom.
Most teachers don’t have a lot of time to be sitting at their desks so instead of a workspace teacher’s desks often become tables that are routinely used for papers and clutter. However, when you eliminate the teacher’s desk it frees up your room and allows more space for student-friendly chairs and tables.
Jennifer Gibbons, a teacher who embraced the idea of dumping her desk, said that she tries to maintain an organized classroom because “Students always learn better in a room that is not filled with distractions and where they feel as though they can move about without fear of knocking anything over”. She also mentioned that even though she is a very organized teacher she felt like she was taking too much classroom space away from her students. Jennifer said that “by limiting my space, my student’s are able to move around the room to work, to use resources, and to focus on their learning” and because of this she decided that she can do without her desk. Instead of the big, bulky regular teachers desk, Jennifer opted for a student desk and placed it in the corner of her room which now houses her computer and other essential items.
However, Jennifer also notes that just because you are giving up your regular sized desk doesn’t mean you won’t have space to grade, plan, or work. Having your own space is important which is why she emphasizes the use of cabinets, organizers, and file folders. Dumping the desk is not an easy thing to do, but space, comfort, and availability it will offer you and your classroom can be worth it.
